History Cherokee Names Holly Jansen Fulkerson as New Executive Director

CANTON, GA — October 19, 2026 — History Cherokee has announced the appointment of Holly Jansen Fulkerson as its new executive director, marking a new chapter for the nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing Cherokee County’s history.

The appointment comes during a leadership transition for an organization that has played an important role in protecting local landmarks, preserving historical records, and educating residents about the county’s past.

Continuing a Legacy of Historic Preservation

Founded in 1975 as the Cherokee County Historical Society, History Cherokee has spent more than five decades documenting and protecting the people, places, and events that shaped the community.

The organization operates the Cherokee County History Center in downtown Canton, which opened in 2022. The museum offers exhibits and educational opportunities exploring the county’s history.

History Cherokee has also contributed to preservation efforts involving historic buildings and landmarks throughout Canton, Ball Ground, Woodstock, and other parts of Cherokee County.

A New Chapter for History Cherokee

Fulkerson succeeds longtime executive director Stefanie Joyner, who departed earlier in 2026 to accept a leadership position with the Historic Macon Foundation.

Joyner joined the organization in 2005 and helped oversee its transformation from a volunteer historical society into a nonprofit operating a permanent museum and educational center.

During her tenure, History Cherokee completed a multimillion-dollar fundraising campaign that helped establish the Cherokee County History Center.

Preserving Cherokee County’s Past for Future Generations

History Cherokee’s work extends beyond museum exhibits. The organization hosts community events, educational programs, historic tours, and fundraising activities that connect residents with the county’s heritage.

Its preservation initiatives have helped protect significant historic structures and promote recognition of historic districts in Canton and Ball Ground.

With Fulkerson taking the organization’s top leadership position, History Cherokee enters its next chapter with an established foundation of preservation, education, and community engagement.
